Regardless of space or budget, you can turn your closet into something special. All it takes is organization and a little attention to detail.
Closet systems. Custom closet organizers are trained to make closets look luxurious, but their talent comes at a price. The good news is you can achieve similar results at a lower cost with a premade unit or modular system available at furniture retailers and home improvement stores. Modular systems are versatile because they allow you to choose from a variety of pre-fabricated drawers, rods, and shelves to create a custom look that fits your space. If you’re looking for a simple solution, try installing multi-level hanging rods, with shelves below. This option provides additional storage and looks better than the standard wire hanging system that most homebuilders install. Alternatively, purchase attractive craft carts with pullout drawers and place them next to each other for a faux custom look.
Furniture. Don’t rule out using furniture in your closet. You’d be surprised what you can create by repurposing existing furniture. For example, a bookshelf is a great option to display accessories and store shoes. A dresser may fit on an open wall or tucked underneath a high row of hanging dress shirts or jackets.
DIY options. If you don’t mind putting in a little “sweat equity,”create your own storage solutions. For example, metal mesh or chicken wire can be used to store high heels. A towel bar serves as easy scarf or tie storage. When in doubt, use hooks. If you want to get really creative, find drawer pulls at flea markets and attach them to the wall for hanging items.
Lighting. Many closets come with a standard fluorescent ceiling light. If possible, switch this out for a more diffused, stylish light source. Not only will it be more flattering, it will change the whole look of the space. If you can’t afford to install new lighting, try battery-operated LED lights. Many models come with adhesive so you can stick them anywhere, and some are even motion activated.
Final touches. Once you’ve got great storage solutions and lighting, all you need to do is add those final elements to personalize your space. A small accent chair or storage ottoman can make your closet feel like an upscale dressing room. Don’t forget about a mirror. A full-length model is best.
