Buying a home is a thrilling experience, yet it also can be sobering — especially if you’re moving in without all the furnishings you need. Here are several tips on how to make your new house a cozy home without breaking the bank.
Don’t be in a rush. If you are moving into a bigger home, don’t let the echo of empty rooms bother you. Your friends and family will understand. Resist the urge to rush to the home furnishing stores and spend on credit. Search online for decorating ideas. Get opinions from friends with tastes similar to you. By going room by room and devising a plan, you’ll be more satisfied both financially and aesthetically.
Prioritize rooms. Two rooms — the master bedroom and the main living area — are generally two of the most popular places to start. You’ll be spending most of your time there. Two exceptions, depending on the circumstances, might be the kitchen and a nursery. By focusing on just two rooms, you’re more likely to stick to your budget and stay sane. The rest of the house will fall into place over time.
Consignment stores. If you haven’t shopped at furniture consignment stores, check them out. Many of them only carry high-end pieces while others are geared more toward do-it-yourselfers. Some even have designers available to help you coordinate a look you have in mind.
Garage and estate sales. Similar to consignment stores, reserve your judgment until you investigate. Online garage sale sites make this option even easier to explore. Estate sales are also a great place to shop because the entire contents of the home is being sold at once.
Craigslist. Similar to online garage sale sites, Craigslist allows you to preview furniture and other purchases without ever leaving your home. But, buyer beware. Deal only with local sellers, pay with cash, and always be aware of your safety. Always meet in a public place. If that’s not possible, take another adult with you and always let someone else know where you are going.
Buying new affordably. Major furniture chains tend to focus big sales around holidays so watch for promotional events. Shop only at reputable stores that have a history of doing business in your community. Do not sign up for “no interest” financing deals unless you are absolutely certain you can pay off the loan before it is due. Otherwise, you will be hit with huge finance charges and penalties.
