Accumulated soap residue and hard-water deposits can turn a once-pristine glass shower door into a cloudy, dingy eyesore. But with a bit of regular maintenance, you can keep that glass crystal clear. Here’s what to do.
Clean yourself, clean your shower!
A little maintenance each time you shower goes a long way.
The simplest way to maintain the door is to squeegee the glass dry at the end of each shower. This helps keep it clean and clear. Still, once per week, take the extra step of doing a little deeper cleaning.
First, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle with one teaspoon dish soap. When you first enter the shower, spritz the inside glass, at least from the bottom to midway up the door, and allow it to work while you shower. At the end of your shower, wipe the door down with a microfiber rag, then squeegee the glass dry.
Tougher stains
If soap scum or mineral deposits have already built up, it’s time to bring in the big guns.
The store-bought cleaner CLR (Calcium, Lime, and Rust) is a potent product for tough stains like these. Spray down the affected door area and rub the cleaner around to cover it. Leave it to work for half an hour, then wipe with a sponge while rinsing with water. For especially stubborn stains, you may have to treat them repeatedly.
Alternatively, you can mix a solution of two parts vinegar, one part water, and one teaspoon dish soap in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture on the glass door, set it for half an hour, and then rinse.
Protective coating
There are also protectant treatments for glass. EnduroShield coats the glass so that water rolls off, leaving no deposits. Another product used on car windshields is RainX.
